What causes greater magnification in electron microscopes compared to optical microscopes?
i know the shorter wavelength of electrons increases the resolution, but what actually causes the better magnification?
The magnification is accomplished electronically. By using magnetic "lenses" (actually eletromagnetic coils) in the electron beam path, the size and position of the electron beam can be controlled. In a scanning electron microscope, the beam is rastered across an area and the signals detected near the sample are rastered across the display screen. As you probably know, it is possible to build optical lenses which would produce higher magnification for optical microscopes but the problem is that you would just see larger fuzziness (resolution limited by the wavelength of light). hope this helps
